One of the many shows that I TiVo is Damages, with Glenn Close. Unlike the other shows, though, it never gets deleted unwatched. Last season was riveting, in large part because of the performances of Glenn Close and Zeljko Ivanek. Ivanek's character is dead, but the quality of acting overall has been so good that the show shouldn't have missed a beat.
Well, I just watched the second show of the second season, and I simply can't believe what has happened. Some time between Season One and Season Two, Glenn Close had some work done. A LOT of work done. Here are the pictures below:
Season One:
Season Two:
Close's face looks like this all the time now -- this isn't an airbrushed pose.
I understand that the temptation to freshen up facially must be very strong, especially if you are playing against an actress 30 years your junior. But whatever Close has done has made it impossible for her to move her forehead, at all, and her mouth is stretched across her face so that she appears to be smiling slightly at all times. It is grotesque and it does not merely hinder her acting, it handicaps her.
I have seen more recent photos of Close and she appears more natural, so I'm hoping that whatever she had done has worn off somewhat. It better. Because I am thisclose to writing Damages off.
I know getting old isn't for sissies. It's a tough gig. But we women have to stand up and demand that our actresses over the age of 35 not turn themselves into carnival freaks in a futile attempt to rejuvenate. There's nothing wrong with trying to look better, but there is a lot wrong with doing the facial equivalent of foot-binding.
